Earlier this month I sold my retail business and closed out my credit card processing accounts. Today I noticed this $49.95 charge on my online bank statement from what looked like my merchant service provider, so I called my account rep. He knew nothing about this charge, so I called the bank. They looked up the debit and UMG did not list a phone number along with the debit. While running two small businesses and having a few websites accepting credit cards, I was used to various bank/credit processing charges and didn't realize this company was fraudulently debiting my account for perhaps over a year. When I called UMG 800-843-0905 this morning, they told me I agreed to this "service" through a phone call placed to my business. When I told them that was impossible, that I don't even accept unsolicited phone calls let alone sign up for something I know nothing about, they said they would call back "within 15 minutes with a recording of the phone call where you authorized this charge".
After 3 hours of waiting with no response, I called them and told them I intend to notify the attorney general and the media, and the woman hung up the phone and wouldn't tell me her name. What's more, as I go through my books for closing out this business, there was at least one time in 2008 that I was charged an overdraft fee because of this debit!
