Any advise for my daughter? She canceled her Capitol One card, owing zero and moved within the same month.
However, they kept accepting charges from a credit service (which they solicited using Capitol One's name). They sent it to their collection company, which tracked her down.
Not knowing she owed anything for 3 months the charges mounted. The total for the Credit Service was $15.
She was able to talk with the credit service and they said they would take $10 off. But the total Capitol One bill is well over $200 now, with all the late fees and penalty. They just get nasty with her and she's not sure what to do. How can she deal with this and restore her credit rating? The whole thing is sort of ironic since it was the Credit service's charges that started it all.
PS. We had our own problem with Capitol One too. They authorized a charge on a card we cancelled. Shouldn't a charge be denied at the register when a card is closed with a zero balance? This was years ago and is settled, but it still didn't seem right.
