I bought a 10,000 BTU Sears window A/C Unit with a 5 year sealed system warranty. Half way through the second year, the A/C stopped working and I called for warranty coverage. I was told a serviceman would come out, but I needed to provide a credit card first. The charge for the visit would not be refundable unless the issue was covered by that warranty.
I am certain that the issue is seized valves in the sealed compressor, as covered under warranty, but am hesitant to give a credit card for a serviceman to visit and verify. I asked whether I could bring the unit to the local service center myself and save some of the cost.in effect, that would reduce the money risked on a service visit to about 1/2. I was told that they would not accept the unit at their center...
Having read about lack of integrity in consumer reviews regarding Sears warranties, I am leery about risking 1/3 the purchase price of the unit on a visit from someone who may not be honest about the issue.
Now, another year has passed and I am in year 3 of my 5 year warranty. I feel that an investment in a new unit from a different retailer would be more intelligent than an investment in a service call. This warranty policy makes claims under warranty unlikely and unintelligent.
I do not intend to purchased from Sears again.
I posted this review once already and it has been marked as resolved. I have not even had one meaningful contact. You can read the details here

Sears is not what it was. That is really sad.
I hope reposting gets me a new case manager who actually communicates. Otherwise, I will need to use other channels, such as the AG, BBB, FTC.
