I contacted planet fitness by phone to inform them that I had moved 4 hours away, and that I would like to cancel by phone. They then said that I had to send a certified letter in order to cancel (which amounts to me having to pay to cancel a membership) or stop by and cancel it in person. Knowing that I was going to go into town a week or two later, I just decided to stop by to cancel. When I got there, I was informed that although the 17th was the last date of my membership, I would be charged one more time because I must cancel before the 10th of every month. No one told me that when I called. The whole process was very bureaucratic and it seems to me that they are intentionally making it difficult to cancel. I asked to speak to a manager and they gave me an email. At one point one of the customer service reps had the audacity to say that I should have anticipated this matter and canceled before I moved, insinuating that I was just being irresponsible. I believe he said, %u201CIt%u2019s one of those everyday things you just have to do.%u201D When I told him that I felt that planet fitness was just making it hard for me to cancel to make more money, and that it was affecting my loyalty, he told me that mailing a letter is industry standard. That%u2019s quite simply not true. I had a membership with LA fitness a few years back, and they allowed me to cancel by email. I%u2019d rather pay an extra few dollars a month if it means that I don%u2019t have to deal with this.
It was difficult to cancel, the customer service rep was very condescending, and I will never do business with Planet Fitness ever again. I think I%u2019ll take my business elsewhere.
