I contacted DIRECTV to cancel service due to a move from Missouri to Florida. The gentleman that I talked to said DIRECTV could provide services for us in Florida. I asked if they could provide TV, high-speed internet, and land line and after checking he could not. I told him that I would just go with the local cable company in my new area that could provide all three. Still trying to convince me to stay with DIRECTV, he said that he could provide the same service I am receiving now and lower my monthly fee to $67.98. That stung a bit because I have been paying $114.65 per month. I told him that for convenience I was going to go with the local cable company. I was on the phone with him for a long time so he really tried to convince me to stay with DIRECTV.
Once he realized that I definitely wanted to cancel, he informed me that there would be a cancellation fee of $320. I asked him why this price wasn’t offered to us before and he said we didn’t ask. I shouldn’t have to ask for a discount; I should be offered that for being a good customer. I wrote several letters with no response. We felt that because we were overcharged for 8 months and the amount was more than their cancellation fee then they already got it from us.
They put the cancellation fee on my credit card; I disputed the charge and it was taken off.
Since they never answered my letters I contacted my state's attorney general's office but that didn't get us anywhere but they did respond by letter.
Then a collection agency started calling us. I sent another letter to DIRECTV trying to get them to understand our side. I offered to pay a lower amount to make this go away and not ruin our credit but they want the whole amount. I don't know what our next step should be.
