BB&T has been my bank for nearly 30 years, counting the years with the small bank it acquired. I once worked there too, so I know how the place runs. Not long ago I slipped up on my account, only for the second time ever, and ended up $30.00 overdrawn. I spotted the mistake fast and deposited enough to cover that amount plus $140.00 in overdraft charges. Those $140.00 I accept without argument, since the mistake was mine.
What I did not expect was that BB&T would also bill me for every 'virtual or pending' transaction that was floating around at the moment of the overdraft. None of those items had posted yet, and by the time they did, my deposit covered them with room to spare. One of them had sat in pending status for 3 days, and because of my single slip, the bank charged me $35.00 for it. Collecting $280.00 over a $30.00 error looks to me like predatory practice.
I appealed to the bank, requesting my money back on these fees. Besides that, I read through the banking service agreement, and it says absolutely nothing about fees for virtual transactions. The bank still insists it did nothing wrong. So I am warning everyone I can: stay away from BB&T if you are a human being who now and then makes a mistake. You will pay, and pay, and pay again.
