Like many people, I bought a Directv HD receiver from Circuit City, and then learned how deceptive Directv is:
1) No matter what you pay a third party for a receiver, you never own it. You are charged a monthly fee for it on top of the purchase price, and if you cancel your service you must return it or face a heavy fine.
2) Any equipment upgrade automatically places you in a new contract of 2 to 5 years. If you cancel, they will deduct anywhere from $300 to $800 from any account they can reach, whether a credit or bank account.
To help others, here is what you need to take action.
I strongly suggest filing a complaint with the California Department of Consumer Affairs, which applies whatever state you live in. Here is a link to the complaint form: http://www.dca.ca.gov/online_services/complaints/compl-form-elm.pdf
