I was a Dish customer for 4 years, I cancelled today (3/29) because of continual service problems (always resetting the box, equipment failing, etc). Since I was not under any contract, when I called to cancel today I was informed that I would need pay to ship their 4 year old equipment back. When I asked if I could deliver it, they said the location was in Texas (I live in Florida). I suspect if I lived in Texas, I would be told the location was in Florida... When I protested, they threw out the old statement "it's in the contract". So I looked at my contract (darn, I keep that stuff). Contract reads:
B. Return of Leased Equipment. Upon cancellation or disconnection of your Services, you must contact our customer service center or call the telephone number set forth in any applicable Promotion Agreement to schedule the return of your leased Equipment. If you do not return such Equipment undamaged and in working order, normal wear and tear excepted, you are responsible and must pay us certain charges as described in any applicable Promotion Agreement.
It's vague, so vague I am happy to speak with a plaintiffs attorney, this practice smells like a Class Action Law Suit. Happy to be that consumer to lead the charge. When you Google this predatory "policy", there are miles of unhappy consumers, who are getting "charged" $15 per box or are being held hostage in lieu of cancelling with Dish Network, indentured servants to Charlie Ergen's fortune. You know Charlie, that folksy guy on the Dish ads, why Charlie sold satellite dish to folks in rural Colorado out of his pickup truck back in the day.
Now old Charlie is making $800,000 per year, and is sitting on $9 million of stock options. Oh yeah, old Charlie's net worth is $8,300, 000,000 ($8.3 Billion), old boy is listed number 106 on the Forbes 200 Billionaires (http://www.forbes.com/profile/charles-ergen/)
Yeah Charlie, you need that $45.00 more than my three childern do, spend it wisely. Why my $45.00 would now make your net worth $8,300, 000,045, we can make it like a telethon, maybe by next year, and on the backs of your customers and their families, maybe we can get you to number 105 on the Forbes 200 Billionaire list. What do you think Charlie??
