Do not ship FedEx Ground or FedEx Home Delivery if you are shipping an item that can easily be broken during shipment, such as a custom-built computer.
I recently shipped a custom computer from Minnesota to Washington state via FedEx Home Delivery, and when it arrived at the customer's residence it would not start at all. When I shipped the computer it was in working order and packed very well. The problem was created by a handler who dropped the box during shipment. The computer case and the box it was in did not sustain any damage, but the motherboard did. When I submitted a damage claim, FedEx told me that if the box and computer case were not damaged, the claim would be denied and they were not responsible for a damaged motherboard and the components on it.
The person doing the inspection of the shipment also told me that I over-packed the custom-built computer with bubble wrap and Styrofoam peanuts. He told me I should have shipped the computer in one box by itself, instead of putting it in another box surrounded by bubble wrap and Styrofoam peanuts.
I also found out that FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery are not directly connected to FedEx air cargo. They contract that portion of the business out to the lowest bidder for FedEx Ground shipments. Needless to say, the employees working for these contractors get paid substantially less than regular full-time FedEx employees. Therefore, they really do not care how your shipment arrives, whether it is working or not, because they do not have to pay for it.
I will no longer be shipping computers via FedEx Ground or FedEx Home Delivery.
