I had lived at Casa De Fuentes 2 years, when I lost my job in September through no fault of my own. I had always paid the rent on time before but was having a little trouble by December. I showed management documentation of what happened and assured them that I had a couple of good job prospects.in the meantime I found a consumer assistance agency which would have given me a grant for that month's rent if the manager would agree not to evict me.
She wouldn't do it! By the time the rent was 2 weeks late they would not only not allow someone else to pay it for me, but informed me they would no longer accept rent from me, even with late fees, because it was too late to pay it now, and that they would be filing suit. They had me served with a petition for the possession of the premises two days before Christmas.
We went to court on Jan 8th (also the day I buried my favorite aunt and the management knew it) and the management still would not be at all reasonable, about working with me, even though by that time I was 1 week into a new full-time job and management knew it. They only wanted to evict me because one time I was late with the rent, even though they had declined an offer from someone else to pay it several weeks before.
It gets even more repugnant: After the death of the aunt who was laid to rest the day we went to court, within a couple days I owned an inheritance.
I again, in good faith, went to the manager, showed her my new bank statements, and explained again that I really wanted to live there, would now pay however many months' rent she wanted, and as a single woman with only a car to try to move and most of my family living out of town, moving would be a hardship.
Casa De Fuentes responded by extorting almost $800/day for the next 5 days (far more than I had left on the lease) by threatening to have the sheriff forcibly remove my belongings and me, and allowing management to take ownership of all of my property if I did not pay the demanded sum every day, until I could find a temporary place to live, get a storage locker rented and get myself and my things (including the clothes that the manager had practically been drooling over) safely away!
Despite all that I ended up paying an additional almost $2000 more than the extortion that went on for nearly a week, which was allegedly supposedly for one and a half month's rent, and late fees. I paid it peaceably.
Nonetheless, I recently moved into another permanent place and had called Casa De Fuentes to find out what their personnel would be saying when they were called for a reference. A woman who had not even worked there when I lived there, and had never met me became so hostile when she was asked that I was forced to call my attorney and let him deal with her.
