I telephoned an advertising company that puts out a small for sale booklet on their 1-800 number and when I got my Verizon telephone bill I was charged by USBI through MCI for calling a long distance number used by the advertiser. I called the advertiser and asked what was this charge, at first they had no idea of what was happening and that other customers had also called in to complain. I called my telephone carrier Verizon and got a bunch of know nothings answering my inquiry. I advertiser called me back and said that they had contacted their telephone provider Metropolitan Telephone and were advised this should not have happened and that is was a bogus charge, and to dispute the charge and not pay it.
I then called USBI and got someone with a foreign accent and got the story that I had no long distance carrier so I was charged, I told him I called the 1-800 number and that yes I did have a long distance carier named Verizon. He said he would turn it over to the Investigatetive team and that I should get a response in 15 to 30 days. I told him they were pretty slow and that answer was not acceptable and huing up.
I will be recontacting Verizon on Monday as this occurred on a Friday and I think I got the "Get out of here for the weekend crowd". Also the FCC will be contacted as well as the Maryland Public Service Commission. Maybe the Atty Generals Office as well because this is FRAUD!!!
