Interested in buying a house, we signed up for a subscription at freecreditreport.com. We didn't expect much for free, and were happy to sign up in order to monitor our credit reports and credit scores. We have been with the company for a year or more.
After buying our house we wanted to get a construction loan for a renovation, and looked to our credit scores provided by freecreditreport.com, as was part of the service we were paying for. We were pleased, and surprised to see we had rather good scores, in the 750 range.
Unfortunately the various lenders we approached had far different scors for us, some 100 points lower. We brought the print outs from freecreditreports.com with us to the bank, but they told us this information was untrue, and that the company was inflating our credit scores to keep us as happy subscribers.
We called and cancelled our account with them, ignoring their complex reasons why their score figures were so high. It has been only a month, so we are watching to see if they hit our account after we canceled.
