Phone & DSL Fraudulent Unauthorized Charges, Rude And Non Responsive Customer Service ripoff

I had ordered at&t phone and dsl service early 2003. They had sent me the equipment a week later and had installed it. The Phone line seemed to work properly and the dsl had connections problems. They informed me that they would have to send a technician out to look at the line to ensure everything was okay with it.

3 weeks and 3 technician visits later, they came to find that the problem was the distance of my apartment from their central terminal, stating that it was over 18,000ft. The DSL department advised me to cancel the line and wait till I another terminal was installed that would give me a strong signal. I decided to cancel the whole thing all together and just go with road runner.

4 years later, i get a collection on my credit report from NCO stating that I owed at&t $1,054.00 for phone and dsl services. A service that was clearly not working and was cancelled. I called their customer service department, I got hung up on once. Got yelled at twice, and none of them seem to be able to pull my records, saying its been over 18months so they don't have the records any longer.

I don't understand how a company can bill me for a cancelled line, the cancellation which their own serviced department advised. I have filed a dispute with the credit bereaus, the collection company and I have reported at&t to the BBB. I also am calling their department everyday until they can do something about this case.
