Unauthorized Equipment Fee Withdrawal from Checking Account Nationwide

We've been very happy Dish Network subscribers for about two years now, but Comcast was running their Digital Cable/Broadband Internet deal and it was just too good to pass up.

On Wednesday, Nov. 15, we got Comcast installed. While the Comcast technician was there, Dish Network called offering us deals to try to convince us to stay. My husband respectfully declined and canceled our service with Dish. He was told by the representative that they would send us a postage-paid box to ship their equipment back to them, that we had 30 days to return it, and that if they didn't receive it they would charge us the $500 equipment deposit. My husband wasn't concerned because he knew they would have it within 30 days.

On Wednesday, Nov. 22, UPS delivered (and I signed for) the postage-paid box. I set it aside, as we were preparing to host Thanksgiving. Wednesday night I got online to balance our checking account and just about had a heart attack when I saw that Dish had charged $500 to our VISA check card.

After about 2 hours on the phone with Dish, my husband was basically told that the postage-paid box is a courtesy, they don't have to provide it, and that the 30 days is more of a guideline and they can charge the $500 whenever they want. After multiple calls and speaking with several supervisors there was no resolution we'll get the money back once they get their equipment Happy Thanksgiving to us.

We also tried contacting our credit union and notifying them that the charge was "unauthorized." We were told by them that once we give our check card number out to a vendor, we basically authorize them to charge to our account.

On Friday, Nov. 24, we packed up the Dish equipment (minus the part from the satellite dish - it's located on the roof of our garage and according to one of the Dish representatives that my husband spoke with it is supposedly noted on our account as being inaccessible and will incur NO fee) and took it to UPS.

Surprise, surprise, the employee at UPS made a point of making sure my husband got a receipt because they've had multiple customers who have had problems with Dish Network (from unauthorized charges, like our situation, to Dish saying they never received the equipment, even with UPS having documentation that someone at Dish signed for it).

As of today, Tuesday, November 28, the equipment is in transit. We've had about $100 in overdraft fees charged to our checking account by our credit union (but we're working with them to get those reversed), and expect to have more. My car payment has bounced (I'll be contacting them today to hopefully arrange for alternate payment), and I'm thoroughly fed up with Dish. I will NEVER again be a Dish Network customer and certainly don't recommend it to anyone.
