Fraudulent unauthorized programming additions added when we weren't home ripoff

To preface my complaint you should know that I live with my 18 year old son in a single family home in the country and my husband is in the Army overseas.

Last week I got a post card in the mail from Dish telling me how to put adult locks on my TV. I didn't think much of it because I already have that set up on my TV.

Now tonight, Sept. 27th, I started surfing at 11:30 at night for something on TV to put me to sleep and I find Showtime, Mo-Max, HBO, Starz and all kinds of stuff. Now I had noticed it over the weekend and thought it was just a free preview like they do sometimes, but I've never seen it through the week. After a little searching I realized most of this stuff was porn, so I called to find out when it was going to be removed.

The worse part of it was that you didn't even need a password because you didn't need to buy it. It made me think back to the postcard. Like somebody was preparing me for what only they knew was going to happen.

Now here's the shocker! When I talked to customer service agent, Jerry, he acted like it had to be someone from my house who had added this programming to our Dish plan. I asked him when the programming had been added and he told me it had happened by phone at 10:42 pm MST. I think that's one hour behind my CST so that would have been around 9:42 pm my time.

I told the agent that I was at work until after 10:00 pm and my son was at an away football game which followed up with a camping sleepover at a teammate's house. All of this was verificable. Nevertheless, Jerry insisted someone saying they were my account owner, added this programming package.

When I asked him who had called, he couldn't tell me. When I asked him if it was a man or a woman, he couldn't tell me. When I asked him what questions were asked of this person to prove it was an authorized account holder, he said they only needed my phone number. I FREAKED OUT!

Now Jerry promptly credited my account and had me put a password on the account, but I was still upset. I told him that if I knew his phone number, I could have done this to him, too. He agreed and said, I'd have to be lucky to find someone with Dish. I rebuttled, saying that in rural Arkansas everyone had DISH or they didn't get TV.

How can we prevent this from happening to others or to me again? Phone numbers are very public. Dish asks me more questions that my phone number when I want to pay my bill, so why don't they do more to make sure it's me on the phone when it comes to adding programming? I'll tell you why, because they are making BIG BUCKS taking orders from anybody.

I believe it could be DISH employees doing this and making either commissions off of the sales or getting bonuses for their high sales.

This problem was supposedly cleared up by Jerry but he told me it'd take 24 hours to be processed. He WAS successful removing the programs from my TV that night. He did put me on hold several times, and I only hope he was telling supervisors that they needed to change their policies. Dish Confirmation
