My fiance started working at Albertsons at the begining of January 06. Thats when the first problem started. They told him he couldnt sign up for the Union until his 90 day probationary period had past. We later found out that he should have joined up with the Union as soon as his first 30 days were up. Then they told him he was going to be laid off because the store was closing. So we figured, why bother joining the Union if he wont be working there any more. Well, they changed their minds and sent my fiance another store. Thats when we decided my fiance should join the Union. So the second week of September, he joined. (Now he has months of back dues to pay!)
This is when problem number two comes in to play. My fiance works evenings, usually until 12am or 1am. Shortly before midnight on September 10, I recieved a phone call. I assumed it would be my fiance telling me he was on his way home, but instead it was another employee. He informed me that my fiance had been involved in a hold up at the store. They wouldnt tell me what had happend, so naturally I assumed the worst. When I got to the hospital my fiance was injured, but still alive. Thats when he told me the whole story.
Two men came into the store. One of them demanded he open the register. My fiance was helping a customer. Because he had not finished the purchase the register was still locked (safety precaution). The man became very angry, grabbed my fiance by the neck and hit him over the head several times with a metal object before he collapsed to the ground. I guess the robbers got freaked out from all the blood because they bolted from the store not even getting any money. My fiance was the only employee at the front of the store that night. One of the managers was in the back, another in the bathroom, and the bagger was elsewhere. The police told us it was a good thing my fiance didnt fight back too hard because one of the men had a gun.
My fiance was already scheduled to have the next three days off. When we went in to see the manager about getting some more days off so my fiance could fully recover and seek counsling, she just looked him over and said, "well is wasnt that bad." She wasnt even there when the attack happend! So, no extra days off. How about letting him work daytime hours at least? Nope.
So I am really at a loss. I'm not sure what to do. At least Albertsons is paying his medical bills. But who is going to pay for the emotional damage? They never did catch the guys. Albertsons wont even give my fiance time off for counsling. He was suposed to get a few paid days off. Help?!
