Kay Jeweler's
Horrible service and workmanship appalling treatment

My boyfriend of two years, decided that he would like to buy me a right-hand ring for our anniversary and Valentine's Day. We were looking for channel rings, which I adore and ended up at Kay's in the Independence Center mall.

I told the saleswoman that I was looking for channel rings. She looked at my fingers and said they were too long to wear a channel ring and that I needed to wear a ring with an ornament on it to make my fingers look shorter. I never heard this before, but immediately became curious about the look of my hands. She did show me a ring I loved, but when I asked her the clarity she said it didn't matter on that ring since the diamonds were so small (it was a ring with clusters of small diamonds and is 5/8 of a carat). She asked if we wanted to put the ring on lay-away, and my boyfriend told her he is paying cash for the ring. She continued to pressure us into using the financing option to the point that it became annoying, like she would earn some type of extra commission for having us sign up for it.

Keep in mind that I am only 22 (my boyfriend 29, but looks just as young as me), so we did look like this young couple and this was my first diamond ring, so I am going to have dumb questions.

I asked my boyfriend if he thought the ring looked real. I did have a friend ask me, but you have to remember, I am a young adult and I am going to have those few friends ask me questions. I personally don't care if they do or not.

The saleswoman thought it was not alright. She said that if someone asked me that, that they do not need to be in my life and if a stranger asked me that, to just smile and walk away. My boyfriend rolled his eyes.

I then wanted to write down all the information about the diamond since I was taking notes and comparing the ones I like. She had showed me the ring in the catalogue a few minutes before and then when I asked her for more information she said, "it is all right here, Hun" clearly annoyed. I apologized and told her this was my first diamond purchase, and she said nothing.

At this point my boyfriend was fed up and we left, went to a different Kay's and bought the ring the following day. I wrote to customer service and a week later they returned my email. I called them and the customer service representative was extremely nice. The manager called me about a week after that and apologized. I told him that I needed to take my ring in again since when I had it sized at the other store, they forgot to rhodium plate it. He asked me if it was more convenient to go to his store, and it is. He then asked me to ask for him if I went to his store.

The story should be over, but today it became worse. I went to the store with my ring and asked a later to speak to the manager. He was not there, so I thought it may not be that bad this time. I went to the cash register and told the woman there that I had a warranty and they forgot to titanium plate my ring after they sized it. She smirked and said, you mean rhodium? Yes.

The ring turned to yellow gold after sizing and it needed to be white gold. She never said, sorry for the crappy product or for making you wait another week for your ring to come back due to our sloppy work, she just took my ring and acted like I was an inconvenience.

As soon as we left, I told my boyfriend that we should go over to Hannoush and see if they have any rings I liked. We talked to the sales people there (who are ALWAYS nice) and one lady said it was common for people to come there upset with Kay's. She even apologized for their actions just because they are all in the same business. I was trying to describe my ring to her, since I was looking for a replica, but wasn't doing a very good job. I decided to go and grab a Kay's catalogue with my ring in it.

When I went back, I was standing next to the cash register and there was no one being helped, though no one seemed to want to help me. There was a man behind the counter, looking at me while eating a sandwich (how professional) and finally the same girl asked what I needed. Completely unfriendly. I asked her for the catalogue and she said they were out and would have more next week.

The treatment in there is appalling. As soon as my ring is returned to me, I am going to return it to them since it has been under 90 days, and go to a place that isn't nicknamed the Wal-mart of jewelry stores.
