The UPS Store
Formerly Mail Boxes Etc Ripoff shipping and insurance on packages destined for APO is an extremely flawed process

A very long story, but here goes:

I am a currently deployed member of the US Air Force and I wanted to have my personal camera here so I can take pictures and capture the moment. I had my friend back at Travis AFB ship my camera and accessories to my APO address with a $2000 insurance on it back on January 28.

He went to The UPS Store on base (formerly Mail Boxes Etc) and they told him not a problem. The store clerk, Dan, hand wrapped and sealed the box in front of my friend. Dan handed my friend the receipt for the transaction and when my friend asked for the insurance information, Dan told him everything was on the receipt. My friend walked out of the store.

A few days later, it was realized that the receipt only had the value of the transaction (~$140) and it had no other description - especially the insurance. My friend went back to the store to get the insurance information and possibly tracking information, and this is what Dan said (paraphrased):

"The US Postal Service handles all packages destined for APO addresses and the insurance on it. The UPS Store only accepted the package and handed it over to the local USPS. Since the package is not handled by UPS, the store does not store any information on paper or in the computer system about the package. If we require any help with tracking or insurance on the package, you will need to deal with the USPS."

Anyone see the problem with this picture already? My friend and I have both spoken with the local USPS and they cannot help us since we can't even provide one shred of information to help identify the package because The UPS Store did not document anything.

Since then, I have been going back and forth with The UPS Store, UPS Corporate, Mail Boxes Etc, USPS, BBB, and recently the State Attorney General (I'm still waiting on his response).

On April 7, I finally received an email (the only email ever) from The UPS Store owner, John Nunn. He said he is working with the USPS Postmaster to try and determine a resolution. I had to give Mr. Nunn an itemized list of what was shipped so he can do 'something.' I've been calling once a week to see if there is an update, but I get the same response from Dan every time, "Mr. Nunn is working on it. We'll keep you in the loop."

As far as I can tell, I'm not kept in the loop and they need to do something to get my camera and accessories back. It has been over 3 months. How long does it take to get anything done? It took them a few mintues to lose my package, but it takes them forever to compensate. I hope they're not trying to delay as long as possbile until I give up.
