I felt the need to respond to another posters' complaint about shady/shoddy installation and bad service from Dish.
By my user name, I'm obviously no longer a fan of Direct TV either, but they were saints compared to DISH. I left Direct TV when I heard that DISH was offering specific HD channels. I contacted them to find out whether or not I might still be able to view these channels, albeit at a lesser quality, if I didn't currently own an HD set—this was a few years ago and at the time I hadn't done too much reading up on how HD worked etc. I just knew I wanted the specific channels etc., and they were the only ones providing them.
Either way, I was told that yes, it wouldn't be any problem—although I wouldn't be enjoying them in true HD quality without owning an HD set, I could subscribe to the package and be able to view them in some form regardless, I just needed a specific receiver etc. I went ahead and signed up, committing to a one year service plan (only way to get the package etc.)
A third party was contracted to do the installation for me as well, and was extremely late, calling me several hours later to explain that things were really busy and he'd be by "soon"... I had made several calls in the interim before hearing from him to the "coordinations office" who didn't seem to be too worried about getting him on the phone... Apparently I have nothing else to do but sit and wait.
Anyway, found out shortly later that it wasn't exactly true, that the very reason why I signed up for the DISH service to begin with was not possible, so I was basically stuck with them for a year. I experienced several other service related problems and couldn't wait to be free from them, promising never to think about coming back.
For the last 2-3 years, every now and again, sometimes sporadically, sometimes as many as 3-4 calls a week or even 2-3 times per DAY, I have been getting robot phone calls from DISH, often taking me away from my work duties or simply enjoying the evening, telling me about the great offers awaiting me from DISH TV. They offer you an option to be placed on their "Do Not Call List", but selecting that obviously does no good, as the calls continue to this day.
After the first few times selecting that very option, and getting continual calls, I would then click the option to "hear more" figuring that perhaps I just needed to speak to an individual. Well, their basic answer is to tell you that it can take "anywhere from 30-60 days to be removed"... Since this has been going on for at LEAST 3 years now, that is obviously not true either.
You can't reach anyone by calling the number back, and trying to contact DISH through their main 800 # to report the activity is met with pretty nonchalant response.
I have now been treated rather shabbily by Direct TV as well, but DISH is by far worse.
They really need to be brought up to speed on how to treat customers better, and to be up front and honest with people when describing prices and packages offered.
There are better options out there, and even NO TV is a better one if that is your only choice besides DISH.
