We rented from Tony Maruri for 3 years in Reno on Fawn Lane. The house was in horrible shape when we rented it, carpet hadn't been replaced in at least 10 years, the wallpaper and paint was in need of re-application. The house was so poorly insulated the wind from Mt. Rose highway would literally make the blinds move with the windows closed! So of course in order to keep warm, we had operated the woodstove they had in the house, burning about 2 cords of wood per winter for 3 winters.
The woodstove is improperly installed and would create a back draft when the fire was going. The small amount of smoke was not enough to notice on a daily basis, but by the time we moved out, the 1970's popcorn ceiling and the 10 year old wallpaper had black marks on it that could be seen in a good light. We tried to clean it, but it just smeared. Tony did the walkthrough, the ONLY walkthrough he did in 3 years and said the place looked fine besides the smoke damage.
A week later we received a summons from Reno small claims court that tony was suing us for 6,000 dollars for the cost to repaint the entire house because of the alleged smoke damage and to replace the carpet that was a minimum of 10 years old.
Throughout our tenancy, Tony was so senile in his old age, he couldn't even remember our names, or who was renting. He seemed like a nice old guy, but obviously does not have the mental capacity to run a business. We are currently in litigation with him to prove that the replacing of the 10 year old carpet and repainting of the 10 year old paint job is considered reasonable wear.
I spoke with the current tenant of the house who said that they have already have had several small run-ins with Mr. Maruri and he seems so senile, they are afraid a similar situation will happen.
Mr. Tony Maruri is a con artist, looking to upgrade is horribly built house with new amenities and have the prior tenants pay for it out of their pocket. Mr. Maruri is still seeking 6,000 dollars AFTER he already failed to return our 2,000 dollar security deposit. If you ever see this name, MARURI on any lease or rental agreement, turn around and walk out!!!
