To Whom It May Concern: I am writing you today in regards to a horrible situation my parents and family are currently enduring. Both my parents are elderly, with my father needing more assistance than my mother. We have been seeking a place for them to live that could best suit their needs. Mid-November, my sisters came upon Arvada Estates (72nd & Kipling) and decided this would be a wonderful place for my parents to reside. Most of it was due to the extremely helpful and accommodating contact person, Michael. My sisters and mother explained their situation as well as my parents' needs. They were told the price of the rooms were negotiable, three meals a day were included, there was an option of hiring a nurse to assist with medical needs, they'd have a screened in patio in my mom's room, and the management would create a doorway (adjacent like a hotel room) in between two studio apartments. This way my parents could have two separate bedrooms. Also, my mother would be able to better assist my father who has multiple medical issues including Diabetes, and difficulty with his vision. My family was told that although my father's room was available, my mother's would not be available until Dec 1st, and the door could not be put in until after they moved in. The day before the moved, my sister called Michael and questioned if a one bedroom would be a better option for my parents since my father started declining in health. Michael persuaded my sister to continue with the original plan, and stated the door would be immediately initiated. On Sat, Dec. 1st, contrary to what was agreed upon, my sister and the movers were presented with only one room (my father's intended room). They were told the other room was not ready because it had only been vacated the day before and would not be ready for another week. My sister and mother were also told there would be no intent on installing a doorway or screened-in patio. When my sister questioned the management staff on duty, she was confronted with hostility and impatience. The staff angrily dismissed her concerns and told her there would be NO door installed, period; my mother's room would not be ready until the following week, and Michael was not working with them anymore so they did not have to honor any promises that he had made. Both my parents had to move into the single studio with half of their furniture, and the other half in storage. The movers experienced frequent verbal abuse while using the elevators to move the furniture. The stress was taking a toll on my parents, and has been for the past week. My mother was told my dad could not come to meals if he happened to have any signs of soiled pants, and that he was not allowed to take his insulin at the table but must take it before he came down for meals. The last day, Dec 5th, that my father was at Arvada Estates, it took the cafeteria staff one and a half hours to bring his meal to the table (this can cause the blood sugar to drop dramatically). The stress has caused my father's health to decline so significantly, we were forced to place in him a long-term care facility to protect his health after only five days of residing at Arvada Estates. My mother's health has also declined; therefore we have decided to pursue another facility to better meet her needs as well.in an attempt to rectify some sort of solution, my sister had a meeting with management. Management is taking no responsibility or accountability for their former representative, will honor no verbal agreements, has not given anyone in my family a copy of the lease agreement, and is charging for a room my parents have not occupied as well a month's deposit and the amount of the room they are living in.in the meantime, my mother is living in the midst of chaos, and being treated disrespectful. Please investigate this as soon as possible, and if you could, direct us to some type of advocacy that can help us determine the rights of my parents. Thank you, Catherine McDonald
