I received a bill recently from Kenley Apartments for $493 for supposed damages to our apartment upon move out. My wife and I lived there for 10 months and were never late with a rent check, and never caused any problem for the management. Some of the charges that they credit to us were listed in our move in inspection sheet. Mysteriously, they have lost that move in sheet and cannot prove that the damages were already there. I made the mistake of not making a copy of that sheet, however, they should have that sheet on record.
Nearly $400 of the charge are of supposed damage to the carpet. Many of the stains that they are charging me for are noted in my move in report. They are also trying to charge me for the seam of the carpet coming up when it was like that when we moved in. The manager actually thought that I had cut the carpet.
Another $40 was charged to me for a broken blind. These blinds are thin vinyl blinds (18 wide by 64 tall) that can be bought at Home Depot for under $5. The remaining charges are for failure to clean the apartment i.E. Urine on the toilet seat, shoe prints in the tub and a dirty oven.
I am a very clean person, and my wife and my mother are clean freaks. Before we moved out, my mother and my wife were the only two people left in the remaining hours in the apartment. They cleaned that place spotless. The dirty oven was from years of use. It was just some burnt stuff in the bottom that was permanently stuck there. Next is the urine on the toilet and shoe prints in the tub. When was the last time that you heard of a lady urinating on a toilet seat, and when was the last time that you took a shower with your shoes on.
The truth of the matter is that from the time that my wife and I moved out until the official inspection by Kenley management was nearly a week.in that time, they had their painters come in a repaint the apartment. To paint above the shower, I bet that the stood in the tub causing footprints. And I would bet that one of those painters may have had to use the bathroom. The management at Kenley is horrible. They cannot show proof of how the apartment was before we moved in, they lost our move in report, and they have threatened to send creditors after us.
I paid the bill today to keep creditors off our perfect credit, however, this matter is not resolved. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and if I do not receive my money back I will be taking Kenley to small claims court.
