Did what was told and still have gas cut off

We were behind on our gas bill and received a notice that the total had to be paid in order to keep or gas from being cut off. Last week we contacted by a person we assumed worked for Alagasco but have since found that they contract with a "third party" on past due accounts. This person said that if we paid the past due amount by August 24 we would not have our service interrupted. We did (online) but still had our gas cut off on the 27th. I called Alagasco and found that the reason for the disconnect was because we did not pay the full amount. They are now requiring the rest of the amount plus an additional $25 deposit and a $50 reconnect fee. I tried to be reasonable with them and asked them to wave the reconnect fee but they said they could not due to the fact that we had our gas cut off previously. This happened because we mailed them the check and it arrived the day they cut off our gas. Once again, at that time there was nothing they could do to help us. They charged us the full amount plus the $50 fee as well as a $250 deposit. This company is out of control because they have no oversight. As soon as possible I will be all electric because at least Alabama Power will try to help you.By the way, the reason we are behind on our bills is because less than 2 years ago I had major surgery for cancer and missed 6 months of work. I am just trying not to go bankrupt and Alagasco is bound and determined to help me get there.
