Complaint / Review
American Van Lines
Damaged Goods

I contracted with American Van Lines (MBM Moving) to move my household goods. This move was made in two shipments picked up on the same date. The first shipment went immediately to MA, the second shipment went to storage until I found a permanent home. I requested Full Value Replacement insurance on both shipments.

The first move to MA went badly with many of my belongings being damaged or destroyed. I filed a claim and after fighting MBM for 7 months (they told me I did not have insurance) and filing a complaint with the BBB they finally satisfied the claim.

A couple of days before the second move from storage to my new home which was a year later in June of the MBM driver called me, told me when he would be arriving and said that I needed a certified check or money order before he would open the truck. I called MBM to find out what the total would be because at the time of the estimate I did not know how long the goods would be in storage. MBM gave me a total over the phone, I never received a line item breakout at any time.

The move to SC was even worse with MBM damaging and destroying several items. They also failed to deliver my couch. I had the driver call the warehouse before he left my house to ask where it was and they said they would look for it. After several calls, they finally said they could not find it. I was referred to the claims rep Brandie Gray who told me that I had cancelled my Full Value Replacement coverage and that my claim for all the damages and loss would be satisfied at 60 cents per pound. I argued that I had clearly ordered FVR as shown on the estimate for both moves and they had eventually satisfied it on my first move. After my experience with the first move, I certainly would not have cancelled the insurance considering the majority of my goods were being moved from storage in the second shipment. Brandie called me later and said that they would provide FVR so I filed the claim on July 11th. On Oct 15th I received their settlement at 60 cents per pound. I have called MBM/American since receiving their letter and no one will return my call.

I am seeking FVR for my claim.
