My husband (who is white) and I (Indonesian) recently shopped at Kohl's on Bell Road & 57th Aveue in Phoenix. I found a cute dress for my sister's baby. I walked over to the service desk nearby and asked if I could purchase this item at the counter. This elderly lady looked at me with all the disdain she could muster and said she normally does'nt ring up merchandise. She said that it is done at the registers near the front of the store. She reluctantly rang up my order without so much as a "thank you mam". I felt bad for her-ignorance is so ugly. I showed my husband the dress and he thought it was pretty but that it needed tights. I told him about the rude woman and he said that he would buy them from her at the service desk to see if he was treated similarly. I stood aside to listen to that conversation and was shocked to hear how well he was being treated. No comments about not normally ringing purchases at that register or having to take it to the front cashiers. Nothing. Just a woman who was pleased as punch to be waiting on an attractive MAN. I was seething. I did'nt write her name down or tell the manager on duty. I was too humiliated. Although, I really like shopping at Kohl's for the most part, this incident has turned me off completely.
