Best Buy and Sears
Warranty

I just want to complain about the warranties I have bought from both Best Buy and Sears.

First of all we bought a 42" flatscreen from best buy and paid $400 for the extra warranty. When the TV broke less than a year later Best Buy was great about sending someone out to try and fix it but they said we would have to have it replaced. The warranty we bought however wouldnt replace the tv, it only gives you the value the tv was worth at the moment. Apparently my 6mo old flatscreen was worth $500 less then the cheapest replacement. Add that with the 400 we spent on the warranty and you might as well have skipped the warranty and replaced it yourself. However the sales man was very apologetic and nice about the situation.

Vowed never to buy from Best buy again... Going on 3yrs.

So we shop at sears. We bought a Kenmore fridge and again, bought the warranty. (Dont ask me why) Three weeks before the warranty expired the fridge broke. We called and set up a repair time, we then defrosted the fridge for a couple days and plugged it back in. This fixed the problem but then the repairman said there was no point in him coming out because he wouldnt be able to tell what was wrong. Of course after the warranty expired it happened again. I did a short search on the web aand found that it was probably the defrost heater or the defrost timer. Both can be checked for repair needs even if the fridge works. An expert in this field should have known this and the repairman should have come out and checked it when the warranty was valid. I called to issue my complaint and two out of three of the people I talked to were very rude. I would like Sears to come out and check and replace (for free) the two parts they should have checked when the warranty was valid. Not only did the CR rep say they couldnt do this she asked me why I didnt called them back so they could send out a different tech. I trusted the tech knew what he was talking about which now I realize he obviously didnt, or he didnt care. Oh, and apparently even though the techs are employed and paid by sears. Sears has no power to tell them to do a service call free of charge. I reitterated several times that I just wanted him to check the two most obvious parts for repair issues. If it was anything beyond that I would concede that it would have been possible he couldnt have determined the problem while the fridge was working.
