I used the Home Depot Dumpster service to remove trash and unwanted items from my garage. I did some research and found a few reviews which stated they will overcharge you with weight and you have no way of proving different. Before I ordered my Dumpster I called and talked with someone from the Oakleaf Management Company to verify their process. He explained how they weight the Dumpster, when they pick the dumpster up from your site it is weighted with the trash still in it. Then once it's dumped they weigh the truck as it's leaving so they can get you weight. He also explained that if the weight comes in over a ton then they round up to 2 tons and so on. But he ensured me they would be fair and if it's 1.1 then they would not round up. I mentioned the reviews where people feel they have been over charged on the tons and he gave me a few tips to make sure things inside don't get wet which cause it to weigh more. He feels this is the reason my people have more weight then they think. So for me, I put a tarp over the dumpster to make sure nothing got wet and to keep other things out. It never rained during the 5 days I had the dumpster so water wasn't an issue. At the end he gave me $25 off the rental fee.
Now I just received my invoice and they said my weight was 4 tons so I assume I has 3 and some change and they are charging me for 4. The dumpster was 1/2 full which I went with the 20 yard instead of the 15 yard since it was the same price. Do I feel I put 3 tons of trash in the dumpster, no not at all. If you look at house when you are moving, a 5 Ton truck will hold 5 tons and moves 4-5 rooms. So if I go on the higher side and say 4 rooms at 5 Tons that is 1.25 Tons per room. There was nothing in the dumpster that took 2 people to lift. I think at most I had 2 tons of trash so I could see getting billed 3 tons. But I think the extra ton is their way of making up for the cost of the rental.
If you are looking at renting a Dumpster, the convenience factor of this service is great. But you need to be aware that you will be charged more tons then you think you are really putting in there.
