I was sold a bill of goods by the authorised agent of Northwestern Mutual Insurance co. Disability insurance seemed like a no-brainer after suffering an injury and relying on State disability, which at the time was somewhere around $650.00/month, hardly enough to sustain life when your mortgage payment was in excess of $ 2,000.00/month. The agent stressed that this was a great policy and included "mental disorders". Years later, when I just couldn't afford this any longer I called the agent to cancel the policy and was told "to never get rid of this policy, you couldn't get this benefit again", so I kept paying into the premiums to the tune of $300.00/month. Becoming unemployed and under the care of a psychiatrist, I reluctantly decided to make a claim, and this was after being out of work and depressed as hell for over a year and a half. The psychiatrist told me that I WAS DISABLED, at that point I made a claim. That's when the fun began...
