I was looking for cheap car insurance. Liberty Mutual said they'd insure me for about $1000 per year - the cheapest of several online bids. So I signed up.
A couple of days later I got a call and Liberty Mutual said they couldn't insure my girl friend. I agreed to this and said I would get her on another company. They said they would take her off and that I needed to return a form. There was no discussion of money or rate changes other than they said my premium would be reduced. I assumed to something less then $1000 per year.
The form never arrived. And Liberty Mutual did not contact me by calling me or emailing me.
Several days later I tried to call them about the form I never got but they were closed. I finally figured out how to get on my web page at www.LibertyMutual.com
and discovered that my girlfriend was still on the policy. I tried to remove her from the policy but when I checked the next day she was still there. Then I discovered that they had not decreased but instead had increased my insurance from $1000 per year to $24,000 per year. And they did NOT remove my girl friend from my policy as we had agreed. I tried to cancel my policy online but that didn't work. I immediately got another insurance policy for $1200 per year from one of Liberty Mutual's competitors.
As soon as Liberty Mutual opened the next day I immediately cancelled my policy as I can spot this obvious rip-off. They emailed me a nice letter saying they were sorry to see me go.
I was very angry so I filed a complaint with www.BBB.org. Liberty Mutual replied to my BBB complaint saying that it was they that wanted to cancel my insurance all along. But as an accomodation to me they were willing to insure me for $24,000 per year. I have been driving for 40 years and have never been in an accident and have never filed an insurance claim.
Now Liberty Mutual is billing me for $377 of the $24,000 pro rated to the few days I was on their policy. And now are threatening to harm my credit if I don't pay.
I am sure this is a Gotcha Capitalism (see book of same title) scheme to make them a few million dollars on the cheap. I class action suit is needed to stop this practice.
Liberty Mutual needs to refund me most of the $100 for the month of February. I only got about 6 days of "coverage" from them.
The creepy thing is that I discovered that my previous insurance was thru them under another one of their subsidiaries of Liberty Mutual. They wanted to increase my insurance from $100 per month to $200 per month so starting this whole story which ended up in them trying to charge me TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS per month.
