I just moved from out of state, and I signed up for a library card, mentioning to the woman I moved from out of state. During the time I had the books I'd checked out for my children, I was hospitalized, and kept them over their due date. When I was released, I returned the books. About 2 weeks later, I recieved a bill from a collections agency for $50 for late fees. Apparently the library charges 20 cents a day per book for late fees, and with 11 childrens books out and a $10 collection fee that they had tacked on, they demanded I pay the whole sum. I spoke with 4 different women over the next week before I was finally given the number of a woman who had the "authority" to potentially reverse my late fees. She refused to, telling me that the library does not have to disclose the fact that they charge late fees, but I somehow have to know that they do, and unless my "house burned down with the books inside, " they would not be reducing my fees.
