A $400.00 overcharge was rung up by the cashier when I bought fencing materials last Sunday. I told her immediately, and she directed me to the customer service desk for a correction. About 30 minutes went by in a line that reached out the door before I asked the assistant manager to help. Cash was the only refund he could offer. When I told him the $400.00 had to go back to my account, and that my work schedule prevents weekday trips to the bank, and asked him to credit my account instead, he replied that I could take the cash to an ATM. My outstanding checks and the risk of bouncing one did not appear to trouble him.
A simple mistake by the cashier is understandable. What bothers me is that Home Depot would not correct it, expressed no sympathy and no apology, and did not offer even a coupon or small gesture to show appreciation for my business. A debit transaction CAN be credited back, and they just REFUSE for reasons unknown. Before that I'd burned at least an hour in the aisles, hunting for products that were out of stock and finally taking substitutes, and playing hide and seek with the "experts" (a game at which they excel). After that came half an hour in the return line, with Home Depot keeping my $400.00 hostage, and the end result was an instruction to take the cash and deposit it at an ATM.
Once I loved Home Depot and seldom bought anywhere else. All the materials for the full remodel of my previous house came from HD. For anyone at HD who reads this, your thinning product selection, silly refund policy and tendency to understaff stores have been annoying customers for quite a while. The attitude of this assistant manager, who simply did not care, made it worse. I am likely wasting time, being an ordinary guy who spends just $10k yearly at HD. Save more. GET MORE DONE??? I got neither! From now on, LOWE'S is where I'll go.
