I had a Home Depot consumer credit card for over a decade and was NEVER late on a payment. However, Citibank apparently runs your credit over and over again (destroying your credit score because each time they run your credit, it counts against you). My account was paid off and I was at a Home Depot ready to check-out.
I ran my Home Depot Credit Card issued by Citibank, N.A. And it declined. I got that credit card in 1997! The Head Cashier came over and said, "do you have another form of payment?" The Head Cashier was very rude and snubbed her nose at me as if I was broke!
Yes, I had many other forms of payment, including cash, but I was NOT going to use them without finding out what was going on. So, I called Home Depot (which, you are really calling Citibank). Citibank never notified me that they run your credit over and over again (they do so every year) and had decided to cancel my account without notifying me! The women said I was delinquent with things on my credit report (2 things) OTHER than credit cards. So, never let anyone tell you that you can always maintain good credit with specific companies, because Citibank and Home Depot are proof that you cannot!
This reflects bad on Home Depot, as well as Citibank. I will never shop at Home Dept again. Lowe's is closer anyway. There is even an anti-Home Depot website that I located and shared my own story because I did not give Citibank authorization to run my credit again, and again, I was NEVER late with a payment; because of Citibank, Home Depot lost a customer of more than 10 years.
