Stamps.com started billed me without my authorization!

I discovered two charges of $17.95 on my Visa statement and contacted Stamps.com immediately to request for a refund and explanation.

Stamps.com insisted that I must have signed up for an account with them on their website. I did not go to their website. I had previously opened an account with them about a year and half ago.

Recently, I tried to purchase a spyware removal program online, and saw that the company tried to push Stamps.com as one of their free offers. I did sign up with the spyware program vendor but had cancelled the purchase within 3 days. At no time, did I sign up to open an account with Stamps.com, nor did I authorize them to debit my credit card.

Stamps.com claimed to have emailed me back in late July that an account was opened in my name, and provided me with instructions on downloading the software. I did not receive that email.

The supervisor at Stamps.com refused to refund what Stamps.com had billed me. She said she would waive the fee for October. I told her I wanted to close the account, and after some haggling, she cancelled the account. What's surprising is that I received the three emails from her immediately - waival of October fee, cancellation of account and a closing statement, which made me wonder what happened to that email in July '08.

I don't see any benefit in paying the monthly fee of $17.95 to Stamps.com. Who in their right mind would pay $17.95 membership fee PLUS labels, and ink to print those stamps, when one can buy the same value in stamps from any local post office? This is definitely a rip off by Stamps.com. They have collaborated with certain vendors like the spyware removal provider to dupe unsuspecting consumers. Per Stamps.com's customer representative who was able to locate my old account that had my previous same Visa credit card number, I believe Stamps.com had ripped me off. Then I logged onto this site, and was shocked to see how many others, like me, have been scammed!
