The Home Depot / Citibank South Dakota (listed as THD/CD SD) opened a false account under my name, complete with an invented payment history and monthly balances. I learned of it when the account showed a 30-day late payment on my credit report.
When the credit report says this account was opened, I was in Africa working for the U.S. Government, so I was not in the USA and could not have shopped at any Home Depot. I do not shop there anyway, and no Home Depot store is within 100 miles of my home. Lowes is where I buy home repair supplies. I rarely use store credit cards, and the few I own do not include one from Home Depot.
Signs that the balances were made up include three consecutive monthly balances of $30, $31 and $32. Another is three straight months in which the balance sat unchanged at $566, and a further pair of consecutive months in which it stayed at $464.
It looks to me as though the purpose of this false account is to damage my credit history. No money is being charged to me, as no such account really exists. Even so, the single 30-day late payment stands as a negative item on my credit report.
