Bad Management Bad Health Hazards Mold Sick Pool Children Ripoff

Never renting from Beaverton Apartments or Affinity Property Management is good advice for those looking to rent an apartment in the near future, unless you want to develop issue after issue and deal with health concerns and bad management.

We live at Beaverton Apartments on SW Erickson Avenue in Beaverton, OR. We live in Apt. #14 and have some very disturbing information we would like to share with the world and those other tenants who also reside at Beaverton Apartments in the hopes to create a sort of banding together to confront and expose Affinity Property Management for what it is clueless.

Ever since Affinity Property Management took over from Dalton, the former management company here, things have spiraled continuously downward with the upkeep of this property, and has become in our opinion, a slum. The living conditions are horrible, and the management is worthless. Sure, we have a manager that does NOT live on site here that comes in during her ever-changing schedule in high heels usually to manage. Yes, she even picks up the property here and there. Finally, yet in high heels which is hilarious to watch at the very least.

Mold is an ever-increasing health issue here at Beaverton Apartments, and to this day has not been addressed by Affinity properly. My wife has severe asthmathough usually only at home. When she goes to work she is finewhen we go out she is finebut when she is home, she uses prescription inhalers 4-5 times a day/night here and has trouble breathing sometimes when shes home. As her husband, this has upset me tremendously, and I have vowed to change things for the better.

Affinity Property Management has sent over a mold expert before to look at our issue. When he came over he took out a pocket knife and took a small sample from a little hole he carved to take it out. He looked at it and told us it was good mold. I've never heard of anything so absurd in my life. We also had a severe mold issue in our son's bedroom on the wall, called management and they sent over one of the maintenance persons we've gone through several since Affinity took over), and he cleaned off the wall really quick with some 409. He said he would be back on Tuesday to paint the wall with anti-mold paint, but never returned. We have spent hundreds of dollars to keep her prescriptions filled so she can breath when she's at home. The mold in the bathroom next to the tub is horrible and stinks. We keep it covered with a towel to try and keep the scent and health risks down.

The medicine cabinets in the bathroom are rusted out, which should have been replaced at some recent time in my opinion. It also took us over 6 months to get a screen door for our patio door too (minus a handle of course just a big hold where it should be), but Affinity Property Management's position was that we were lucky to get one as they were not required to supply them.

Now let's talk about the swimming pool. Oh that's a hot topic over here let me tell you! For a few months when the heat was turned off on the pool, we had two ducks take up residence there for a few months. They lived in it, swam in it and pooped in it all that time. However, when the time to open the pool came, management did not drain the pool even once to clean it and supply fresh water for health concerns. When I brought this up with them, Kim Crown, the apartment's Portfolio Manager for Affinity wrote us back and told us that they could not do anything about the ducks as they of course did not want to harm the ducks. Of course no one wanted the ducks harmed, but we did want the pool cleaned professionally. Their response was to tell us that as long as they kept adding chemicals to the pool to keep it balanced then that's all they had to do. Hogwash!

After finally taking enough of this health-hazard living arrangement with Beaverton Apartments and Affinity Property Management, we made the choice to LEAVE. We went and found another apartment community that not only has clean and well taken care of apartments to rent, they also have professional on-site management 24 hours. When we told them of the living conditions at Beaverton Apartments and the way that Affinity Property Management had handled the property, they were shocked. Now I see that at least one other person has experienced similar issues (though far worse it seems), here as well. I really feel for the sister of that lady that wrote in here and her 19 mo. Old son. To put a single mom and her infant in such a place of health hazards is irresponsible management at the very least.

When we decided to leave this health trap, we made an offer that was more than generous. We gave a 42 day notice to vacate, agreed to pay July rent in full (we have NEVER been late paying rent here for 2 years), and agreed to pay half a month rent up to the 15th of August even though we were moving out the 11th. When we took this to Affinity Property Management, they told us that we would also have to pay lease break fee of $620.00! I told them that due to the horrible conditions present that our offer was more than fair. They wrote back (Kimberly Crown did), and pawned off our concerns here and told us we had to pay the fee. Well, we still don't believe in paying it, but will so we are not the bad guys here.

Since Friday, we have seen the report on here, talked with two other tenants who have similar problems (one even had termites!), and will continue to talk with others who wish to contact us. We have sent this issue to the major media outlets Channels 2,6, 8 and 12 to see if they might pick up the story as a public interest piece who knows? We are also going to file a lawsuit against Affinity Property Management in the very near future, and have turned this information over to the City of Beaverton to investigate as well.

We have much more to say, so if anyone wants to contact us, please do. Thanks.
