So I am sitting in my dorm room one evening when the phone rings. It is my room phone so I figure it's my mom. Wrong. It is a frendly woman named "Marie" she starts telling me about how I had just won a spot in a $25 thousand sweepsteaks. Cool. The she adds that I also am able to get great deals on tons of different magazines. $3.99 a month. She asks about some of my interests and offeres me 4 various titles, $3.99 a month for 4 magazines is pretty nice. She also tells me I will recieve a watch absolutely free. Then she tells me that because she is a newer employee that her supervisor needs to varify my information. Ok. She doesn't put me on hold (I figure it is because she is new and inexperienced) she, instead talks to me about the weather here, different movies and things and then she is cut off and "Adam" begins to speak.
"Sorry to cut you off with Marie, I just need to varify some information..." He also seems very friendly. He asks if Marie want nice and keeps the conversation very casual. "Can I verify your credit card numbers?" he asks and I wait for hime to say number (after all, if he is verifyinghe should already know them). He replys "Anytime you're ready..." (apparently I am going to tell him) Foolishly I give my numbers to him. He then says "Ok, so rather than charging you $3.99 a WEEK, we will charge you $69.16 for the first 15 months, then your magizines will keep coming and you won't pay a thing." (somewhere it changed from $3.99 a MONTH to $3.99 a WEEK). I assume I simply had mis heard "Marie" and agree. "Adam" continues to speak, saying that HIS supervisor must now confirm the information. And soon I am speaking with a woman named "Carmen."
Carmen then tells me about "Adam" being a newer employee and that she must make sure he has done his job properly. (I find it odd that 2 of the people I spoke to were both "Newer employees" but still continue to give my informations to these people because they seem very friendly). My conversatin is now being recorded by Carmen, who seems to be the only one telling me about the contact information (which turns out to be false), she then has me answer questions to a recording and then leaves me for the evening. 35 minutes on the phone with those damn people.
Then I sit down to do the math, something isn't right. I decide in the morning I will call and cancel my subscription.
The next morning I call the number Carmen had given me. It tells me to call back during normal business hours, 8am-11pm (it is 11:00 am). I call my credit card company, I have already been charged the first payment and must disbute it. What will come of it, I am still not sure.
