My wife and I were very concerned about our ridiculous air conditioning bills. Our house is about 2,500 square feet and we were getting bills as high as $560 per month in the summer even after we installed a brand new high efficiency heat pump air conditioner. So we thought we would talk to State Energy Conservation and see what they could do about our attic insulation.
They have a product called the Attic Shield that they install in your attic. It is supposed to reflect the solar energy that hits your roof and gets absorbed into the attic, and keep your air conditioning costs lower by keeping your attic cooler.
After we installed the system, our electric bills went from about $275 average for March, April and May of the previous year down to about an average of $167 per month for this year. We just got the June bill and it went from $513 last year to $381 this year.
I admit that these savings are significant, but at the same time, I thought we would cut our electric bills by half because the salesman said that air conditioning is about half of a typical electric bill. I don't want my money back, but I do think they should do a better job of explaining how much the Attic Shield can actually cut the electric bill because I thought the savings would be bigger.
