Ripoff-billing for phone and service I never had

I ordered a phone first week of Dec. It was a Motorola and would not work, made many calls, finally they sent me an Ericsson. It could not be activated, many more calls. With no decent response from anyone on what to do I told them I wanted to return the useless phone and cancel any committment. The gentleman I spoke with said no problem, gave me an address to return the phone and a confirmation number which I have. He said I needed to return the phone before Jan 4 so I would not be charged any fee. I returned the phone on the 2nd of Jan. I purchased a different phone at a local establishment with a Verizon wireless connection. It has been very successful.

Today I received a letter from Worldcom saying I owed a cancellation fee because I did not cancel within 15 days, info which nobody ever told me before. Besides I had no phone that would work the entire month of December and they expect me to pay to cancel something that did not work? What is wrong with these people? I was told what to do and I followed the directions exactly. I am exasperated as to what to do. I thought having a cellphone would simplify my life but Worldcom made that an impossibility. After reading usacomplaints.com I was appalled at the way this company handled customers. I have no intention of paying these people anything. If anything, they should pay me for putting up with them.
