I brought a new computer from Dell on April 16. It was a 4550 Dimension. I smelled a burning scent in my bedroom on July 5. I couldn't believe that this burning smell was coming from my new computer. So at this point, I turned off my computer immediately. I called Dell Tech Department. The first person I talked with told me to turn the computer back on; I told him that I was afraid to turn it back on again, because I didn't want this computer to catch a fire. I asked him is it possible for it to catch a fire, he told me yes, so I asked him why do you want me to turn it back on, if that was possible. I hung up because I knew that this man did not know what he was talking about.
I got frustrated, and call back a few minutes, later. This 2nd person told me to open the back of the computer. Now I am just an ordinary person, I do not know anything about opening the back of the computer. I would not know what I would be looking for in the first place. She got frustrated with me and she hung up on me. Finally, I called again, and third person did tell me not to turn it back on, if it has a burning smell coming from it. She told me to look at the back of the computer to see if anything was smoking. I did this but I didn't see any smoke, but I noticed that the black supply cord was hanging loose, and the smell was extremely bad when I got on my knees to look at the back of it. She asked me did I see any sparks coming from the computer when all of this was happening, I told her that I didn't know because the CPU unit was under my desk, and at first, I thought it was something else in my bedroom burning. I had no idea that it was the computer. She told me that she would send some replacement parts.
A few days later, an independent tech arrived at my apartment to replace the parts. He did this and as soon as he turned the computer back on again, this burning smell was happening again. He took it apart and found out that it was the fan that was not working, so this is why I smelled that burning scent. He got on the phone with Dell Tech Department himself and them the problem. They told him that would send me a new system.
At this point, I was pretty happy, but when I got the system, I opened the box and discovered that this was a refurnished system. It was an 8300 Dimension.
So I called again, and ask why are you given me a refurnished computer when I originally brought a new computer. They told me that they do not give out new computers because my original computer was over a year old. If my original computer (4550 Dimension) would had this burning smell with the first 21 days of me having it, then I would have a received a new computer. They told that I should have been happy that I had the extended warranty on it, or I wouldn't receive anything. They also told me that this computer is a better computer because it is an 8300 Dimension, even though it is refurnished.
I think that I should have received a new computer because that is what I am paying for in the first place. I am still paying on my computer because it was financed. Of course, I would never buy another Dell Computer again.
