ATT wants customers to switch to U-verse - ATT DLS VS U-VERSE

Aound July 1 I started to investagate the idea of disconnecting my landline phone. I have been with ATT since 2008. Where I live their isnt a big choice of providers. I have had the regular problems with them like wrong billing amounts and customer service reps. Lying too me (with I would catch them doing & would get credit on my bill) with is good for me! I wanted to drop my landline and just have DSL (Express). I need to lower my bills & quaiftly for a free cell phone (low income) with 250 mins. I talked with Att Retentions about my internet, the price & my landline which are connected together. Retentions told me that I can have DSL & Disconnect my landline. But that my internet price would go up 5 dollars a month (which is not a problem). Customer service rep last week also said that could me done. TODAY July 11 Customer rep. Is saying that once I disconnect the landline line, I have to go to U-verse. Get this Retentions told me just ask for a conversion (she said nothing about u-verse) which I come to find out their is a up front fee of 149 dollars (100 modem 49 activation fee)
Why would I want U-verse with a upfront fee of 149 dollars?
I'm trying to lower my bills
ATT is wanting customers to switch to U-VERSE is not giving customers a choice to stay on DSL. If u are a new customer or u disconnect your landline, U have to apply for U-VERSEREALLY UNFAIR!
