I had a question about formatting a date in an Excel header. I went to microsoft.com for help, but could not find an answer. The website "office. Microsoft.com" itself referred me to Omnitech. I clicked on the suggested link, and connected with an agent at omnitechsupport.com. I explained my question and she offered me free assistance for 15 minutes. She took several minutes "researching" my question, then asked if she could remotely control my computer. I reluctantly agreed. She spent a few minutes poking around my computer.By this time well over 15 minutes had passed. She then told me that I had "malicious software" on my computer and she wanted to remove it. I explained that I use Norton Antivirus regularly and asked what this had to do with my simple initial question regarding Excel. She said she would answer my question, but that I also had "malicious software, " undetected by Norton, that needed to be removed. I smelled a rat and worried that she herself had installed "malicious software" while poking around. I cancelled the remote control and left the website. I hope that my computer is none the worse off for this interaction.
