Hughesnet internet
Avoid at all costs

We have had HughesNet for 2 years because we live in a rural area that has no other ISP options besides dial-up. It has been a complete and total rip-off. The "lightning fast internet speeds" (their words) are below average at best and barely above dial-up (even when our fair access policy (FAP) allowance hasn't been exceeded) at worst. The whole FAP thing is a racket to make you pay more. I don't know of any other broadband/DSL company that has such a policy. My kids can't watch videos (for school or You Tube) because it causes us to exceed the FAP. For $70/month, we should be able to be on it almost 24/7. We have to pay $5 to have it reset every time we exceed it.

To add insult to injury, we're getting ready to do a military move. The account is in my husband's name because he was here when we set it up. However, he is currently unavailable to go through the cancellation process and it falls to me. The first "customer service rep" (and I use the term 'service' loosely) I talked to could barely understand me and had to ask me to repeat everything I said. She kept insisting on speaking to him. I explained numerous times that he was with the military and unavailable and that I was handling the move. She finally just hung up on me. That was the final nail in HughesNet's coffin. I called back, got someone else and he did some research and said that either he had to speak to my husband or I had to fax a POA to them. At least the POA beat getting hung up on. When I was finally able to reach my husband, he made the call. To add insult to injury, we asked to have the service disconnected at the middle of the month when we move. Nope, they won't disconnect it in the middle of their billing cycle so we have to pay for another 2 weeks even though we won't be here to use it.

AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS. Go through your cell service provider, go to the library but AVOID HUGHESNET. The service is slow for the price and they wouldn't know customer service if it slapped them in the face.
