Best Buy - Replacement and wiping of Hard Drive when reporting a power problem Ripoff

I recently had a problem with the power plug on a Gateway laptop I purchased from Best Buy. Sice the power was out on my PC, I had no way to back up the data or access any of the files on the laptop. I took the laptop into Best Buy for warranty repair and told it would be about 2 weeks to repair.

Two weeks later I called into the Best Buy store and told that they were waiting on parts and would give me a call when it was complete.

The following week I received a call from their sales department asking me if I wanted to pay $99 to have my data restored. Wondering why my data would need to be restored due to a power problem, I was told that their diagnostics found a problem with the hard drive and they repaired it while in for service. I explained that I only wanted the power port repaired and to put the old harddrive back into the machine. I was told this was not possible as the harddrive had already been repaired.

I called Best Buy customer service, and after being on hold for 20 minutes, finally reached an agent. They said that they would request the hard drive being returned with the laptop to the local store.

Returning a call several days later, I was told that my original harddrive had been destroyed and that my laptop was being held until my discpute had been settled. It also stated that the wservice contract that I had signed gave permission for Best Buy to replace my harddrive and the calling of transferring of data was a courtsey call.

A week later I called only to find that the local store had not seen my laptop, but had received some boxes in and would call me back. My laptop was finally received, yet when I picked up there was no operating system on the laptop as Best Buy did not have any disks for my brand of laptop.
