My cousin died tonight in the line of duty doing what he loved.
End of watch happened at march 28 at approximately 9 P.M.
They called us the moment ems brought him to the emergency room.
The patrol unit was totalled.
Ems said there was no pulse when they arrived.
The wonderful doctor and er staff worked on him for 45 minutes but i knew if there is no pulse when the patient comes in and it takes that long —that the person is gone.
They think he died instantly — no pain, no fear. It was all over.
Then the phone calls started coming, one right after the other, over and over and over, before i have even had time to think or notify the rest of the family members and before i have even had time to make funeral arrangements... The phone calls from h e l l!
His body was going over to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
I have seen about 100 autopsies and i know what happens to the deceased there.
And when i finally composed myself long enough to answer the phone, it was some yuppie from the blood and tissue bank wanting to scavange the parts of him like parting out a wrecked car and describing to me how their recovery procedures worked and what they are going to do the remains.
Between them and the autopsy, there might have been enough of him left to put in a very small container.
I wanted to help but when they added that if he was not suitable as a donor, they were going to dispose of his parts in "research."
And probably put the rest in the garbage as biohazard to be incinerated as medical waste somewhere.
I was agreeing to organ donation — not to selling pieces of him like this was a butcher shop.
If you can will assure me that you can use his organs and bone marrow and it will save a life, i will do it.
But i don't want him to be parted out and then the parts sold.
We have funeral expenses here.
After we left the hospital, we were driving to the scene where his death happened. Everybody was gone...
And the phone never stopped ringing the whole time.
It is one thing to agree to an organ donation to ave a life right then and there —no problem.
But to part him out and sell the pieces — i have a big problem with that!
I passed the phone off to a relative because i can't stand these people calling anymore.
They acted like they didn't have a clue what an autopsy does and that there might not be enough left for a donation. They acted like they wanted his whole body and i am not sure that somebody isn't going to let them have it.
I did not agree to let them have any parts of him!
I do not trust them and i am sorry i ever talked to them.
They charge a lot of money to people who need this and we cannot afford a good funeral for him and they don't care. At least they could help financially with that.;
I refused to go through with it because i don't trust them.
But i wouldn't be surprised if they didn't part him out anyway.
