I bought a sectional from the Brick in Saskatoon in Sept '07. Last week I noticed a rip on one of the seats. Since I had bought the 5 year warranty and still had 3 months before it ran out I decided to call them and see if they would stand by their claim that they will fix accidental rips. The lady on the phone said the since I lived out of town, to just take some pictures and email them. She informed me that since they don't make that couch any more and since the rip wasn't on the seam they may have to get me a different couch.
Less then 24 hours later I get a reply saying unfortunately the couch is unrepairable so she has gone ahead a but a credit on my account for the entire purchase price including taxes!
We went into the city yesterday just to have a look at a few different options. I really liked our sectional and had just finsihed developing our basement and was going to move it down there. I asked them what they would do with the couch when I brought it to town and they said it would go to the clearance center downstairs. I asked if maybe I could purchase it back without bringing it in, since it was still good enough to have as a basement couch. They said it shouldn't be a problem and would find out how much it would sell for.
When they told me 198 dollars and tax, I jumped on the opportunity. I wouldn't have to haul the couch an hour into the city or pay them 150 dollars to pick it up! So in the end I bought my old couch for 200 dollars, and now have a 1400 dollar credit at the brick, which I can use on anything in the store!
It was the perfect result. Keep the old couch and basically get 1200 dollars back for a 1" rip in a couch that I have used for 4 1/2 years!
