Will not honor warranty in user's manual that came with the microwave

I purchased a GE microwave from Wal-Mart in Orgeon Ohiio on November 7. According to the owner's manual, the GE Microwave had a one year warranty from the date of purchase. If the product fails dur to a defect in materials or workmans ship, the exchange unirt is warranted for the rest of the year. The product is to be taken back to the place of purchase.

On March 12, about 20 weeks from date of purchase, I had a major problem with the microwave, which operates by a touch pannel. I touched the time/cook button, and then set the time and tried to start the microwave. The results was that the microwave would not start and the time kept flashing, I tried to clear the time by touching clear, nothing happened. Even opening the door would not clear the time set. I pulled the plug to shut it off. Next, I noticed that the time/cook button was melted, and several other areas on the pannel were melted. I called Wal-Mart about returning the microwave and was told the following:

Wal-Mart will not cover the GE Microwave, stating that they have a 90 day return policy, and the 90 days had already past making the 90 day void. I was to notify the company that manufactured the product.

I called GE Customer Relations (1-800-386-1215) and gave them the model and serial no. I was told that they do not repair, sell parts to or replace that particular model. I would have to dispose of it myself. However, they would send me a compllimentry card. I was to purchase another microwave, and then return the card and a copy of the newly purchased microwave receipt to GE. When they received the information they would send me a rebate check in the amount that I spent on the faulty GE microwave. ($62.00). They would not replace the product. Moreover, they did not refund the cost of the microwave except with the exception of a rebate by purchasing another microwave.

I believe that companies that layoff people and move factories overseas, should be responsible for what that factory produces. That also goes for companies overseas that are hired to produce merchandise using the companies name such as GE. If the products as faulty, then they should be held responsible, and not be allowed to tell the consumer that they will not replace the product or refund the money spent on the product.
