I will start off by saying that, based on what I have been reading on this site, many people have been ripped off by this company! That said, I will tell you my story.
In May, after growing tired of cable prices going through the roof, I decided to give DirecTV a try. The fact they were giving me a trial period was enough for me to pull the trigger. After two days, I came to the conclusion that it was too inconvenient for me to have a regular box, a DVR box, and an HD box, plus the HD picture was inferior to cable, so I decided to immediately cancel the service.
Upon cancelling, they sent me FedEx labels to send the boxes back, which I immediately did. I assumed at that point the chapter was closed. I know a lot of you are asking why I am writing this when all this happened a year ago, right? Well, here is why.
Today I got a call from a collection agency saying I had a balance of $300! I said, "You have got to be kidding me!" I was told that I was being hit with an early termination fee and that I did not return one of the boxes. I immediately called DirecTV to get an answer. When I got the representative on the phone, she told me she had to clarify my information with her supervisor and put me on hold for literally 30 minutes! I called back immediately, and the next lady apologized and said someone was going to contact me within 10 minutes. I told them that if I see anything on my credit report, I would sue them for major damages. I am in the finance business, and bad credit of any kind will greatly affect how I do business. Of course, that call never came.
For a company as large as DirecTV, their customer service is incompetent at best and downright fraudulent at worst. And did I mention that after all of this, they wanted to sell me a package? All this, and they still did not resolve the issue. These people are crooks!
