Failed to upgrade computer on request because I was 1 day late in the time limit set out in the fine print

It was about 2 years ago that I needed a new computer. I went to Best Buy because it was convenient, and close to my home.

There was a big sign stating that returns (in undamaged condition) would be accepted up to 21 days after purchase.

After purchasing the computer (an HP pavilion 5280), I realized it did not have a numeric keyboard, which I wanted.

I decided to return the computer, as I had only had it for 2 weeks. Tomorrow will be OK.

I repacked the computer with all its original parts, instructions, packing material, etc. And took it back to the store for a refund or exchange.

Upon arriving at the returns counter, I was informed that computers could only be returned within 14 days. "But your sign up there, " pointing, "says 21 days."

"Read the fine print on the contract." I was instructed. The clerk showed me on the contract, in tiny letters, that computers, among other appliances which were listed, were only returnable within 14 days. This was the 15th day.

After arguing with the clerk for a while, I asked to see the manager. He came over, listened to my plight, and informed me that there was nothing he could do. After more arguements, I asked for his superior. The superior repeated the process.

I then offered to have Best Buy order me a more expensive computer, also an HP, with a numeric keyboard, pointing out that this computer cost some $800 more, and they would make more money. They refused this offer, too! All because I was 1 day late, and had depended on the large sign, instead of reading the fine print.

Although technically correct, it seems to me that it would make better business sense to have made the upgrade, and made a bit more money, rather that sticking to the letter of the contract, and losing that money, and a customer for life.

Oh, they offered to sell me a peripheral numeric keypad for my computer for $29.95 (plus tax). Naturally, I declined.
