Grants Grant giveaway scammers checking account ripoff

Called on my cell phone. They had my phone#, name and address. Said I was entitled to a US Government Grant of $12,500 because I was a tax-payer.

US Central bank wanted to wire transfer $12,500 into my checking account. There would be a $49.95 processing fee. Needed my account # to set up a 3-way confrence call with my bank.

I was reluctant to give my acct. Number over the phone. The man asked if I wrote checks to pay bills. When I answered yes, he said then my account number was not confidential. I still resisted so I was given a supervisor. This woman convinced me to give my account number. They are very good. Both parties sounded like they had an Indian or Pakistani accents.

I was asked to voice record my name, address, phone number and bank routing number and account number. When I said "no" I don't agree to chcarges to my account - the woman broke in and convinced me to say "yes" to the 49.95 charge.

The second time through I heard that there would be health care benefits charges to my account. There was to be a charge of 299.95 to receive information about getting grants next year - this year was free. I hung up before the recording was finished and called my bank.

My bank has put a manual hold on my account and I will have to close the account and get a new account number. The bank officer said, "NEVER GIVE YOUR ACCOUNT NUMBER TO SOMEONE YOU DIDN'T CONTACT FIRST." The company gave me the 866 number to call and cancel services. You can't get through on it. There is lots of information on the web about these crooks. I wish I had googled while I was on the phone.

Seems like the address is for a vacant building and the funds go overseas. Do what you can to stop them!
