I got a call from a 5 digit cell phone number from an asian male. They had extensive information of the previous owner of the cell phone.
They said I was among 2300 people selected for government grant money I did not have to pay back. Not being the person they called didn't bother them.
They asked for my name, address, phone, bank, but most importantly bank account number. I gave them false but good information to probe them. They wanted to charge around 300$, which they said was refundable, to apply for these government grants. This was probably a low number since I said I was a college student.
They transferred me over to a "verification" asian woman. She "recorded" my information over again. I hung up midway and they called me back, I got their telephone number, then I called them back. I got their address information, which they gave me because all they needed was one more thing for me to say on the phone.
Oh, and they initially wanted my address so they could send me the grant information after the phone call.
Beware! This might be a slightly legal scam (since they are applying for grants)! I think it was also known as American Grant Information Center, so its an old scam.
